A VDI workstation behaves like a remote computer: printers, USB keys and the clipboard often have to be redirected explicitly. Here is how to get the most out of your peripherals depending on your configuration.
What works by default
The keyboard, mouse and display are passed through to the remote workstation. Sound is enabled in the browser or in the desktop. Printing, USB devices and the clipboard, however, depend on the workstation configuration and the permissions in place.
Printing from the VDI
Two simple methods: print to a PDF file on the remote workstation, then download that file and print it from your computer; or connect a network printer directly on the workstation when the network allows it. For a local USB printer, redirection must be enabled on your workstation: ask support for the configuration.
Plugging in a USB key
USB redirection is not universal and depends on the plan and the configuration. When it is available, the device appears in the workstation after authorisation in the access interface. Otherwise, transfer files through cloud storage or email. For security devices (tokens, card readers), tell support the exact model before the service is set up.
Using the clipboard
Copy and paste of text between your computer and the remote workstation works when the browser allows it. For large volumes or files, use a file transfer: the clipboard is not designed to move whole folders or executables.
Sharing files
- Place files in a cloud space reachable from both sides.
- Use the desktop file sharing feature when it is offered.
- Avoid unverified USB keys for sensitive documents.
- Delete temporary files after use.
When to contact support
State the type of device, the model, the intended use and the exact error message. For a printing problem, say whether the document comes out of the remote workstation or of the local printer: that immediately guides the diagnosis.
