Odoo brings sales, purchasing, accounting, stock and customer relationships into one database. A successful deployment depends less on the technical installation than on preparing the scope and the data. This guide sets out the framework for an Odoo project hosted in the OpenVista cloud.
What an Odoo ERP covers
Odoo is a set of modules that you enable as needed: sales, purchasing, invoicing, accounting, stock, manufacturing, CRM, projects and website. A project usually starts with three to five modules covering the core activity, then expands in waves. Electronic invoicing and local reporting require dedicated configuration and support, and should be framed from the definition phase.
Prerequisites before deployment
- Describe current processes: who does what, with which documents and which approvals.
- Collect master data: customers, suppliers, items, chart of accounts and opening balances.
- List users and their roles, distinguishing read-only access from data entry.
- Check network access, the internet connection and browser versions.
- Appoint an internal owner able to settle configuration decisions.
Choosing hosting
For an instance that is installed and maintained without system administration, the SaaS Starter, SaaS Basic and SaaS Pro plans are the most direct starting point. To keep control of modules and extensions, a dedicated VPS fits: a VPS-2G is enough for a test environment, while a production instance needs more memory depending on the number of users. Shared hosting remains suited to a showcase site and email, whereas Odoo (Python and PostgreSQL) runs on a dedicated server or a managed plan.
Migration approach
- Process audit and agreement on the scope of the first wave.
- Configuration on a test instance, with a representative data sample.
- Role-based training and user testing on real scenarios.
- Final data load and cut-over, preferably at the start of an accounting period.
- Close support during the first weeks, then a review of gaps.
Security, backups and updates
Every user has a named account with rights limited to their role. Backups must be scheduled, kept outside the instance and, above all, proven by a real restore. Odoo upgrades are prepared on the test environment: third-party modules, customisations and data must be validated before the production cut-over.
Budget and timeline
An Odoo project cannot be priced from a single rate card: the quotation depends on the number of modules, the volume of data to migrate, the adaptations and the support expected. The timeline follows the same logic, with phased delivery so that a useful first scope goes live early.
Next steps
Prepare a written description of your activity, the list of modules you want and a data sample: these three items frame the project and help decide between a ready-to-use plan and a dedicated VPS. The offers below can be ordered online, and the OpenVista team can assess a broader requirement (see the Odoo ERP page).
