Connecting to VDI from Windows, macOS or iPad

The VDI workstation opens in a browser, so you can work from Windows, macOS or an iPad with the same credentials. This guide lists what to check on each device.

The common ground: the browser

VDI access goes through the browser, with no heavy client to install. Use a recent version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, and allow pop-ups from the workstation address. A wired connection or a stable Wi-Fi noticeably improves the desktop display.

From Windows

  1. Open Chrome or Edge and go to the access address you received.
  2. Sign in with the username and password of the workstation.
  3. Accept full screen and the permissions the browser asks for.
  4. Create a desktop shortcut to the address for next time.

On a corporate computer, check that the proxy or antivirus does not block the connections used to display the desktop.

From macOS

Safari and Chrome both work on a Mac. On a Retina screen, adjust the browser zoom for a comfortable display. Some browsers ask explicitly for clipboard permission: accept it if you need to copy text to your Mac. Also check that full screen is allowed, otherwise the browser toolbar stays visible.

From an iPad

On iPad, a recent version of Safari or Chrome is enough. A Bluetooth keyboard and a trackpad make daily use more comfortable, because the virtual desktop is designed for a mouse. Lock the orientation to landscape, enable full screen and keep the screen awake during long tasks.

Switching device

Your credentials are the same on every device. Depending on the workstation configuration, only one session can be open at a time: log out properly before moving to another device, and always save your documents before closing the browser.

Improving smoothness

  • Close unnecessary tabs in the local browser.
  • Use a wired connection or Wi-Fi close to the router.
  • Avoid public networks for sensitive documents.
  • If your network access is filtered, the VPN Mondial subscription provides an encrypted connection on your devices.
